Idaho State Police have identified the victim of a fatal bicycle accident involving a vehicle in Coeur d’Alene, ID near the end of October. This bicycle accident is still being investigated. It was reported that the victim of this bicycle accident has ties to the Spokane, Washington area. A passing motorist said they saw the biker riding in the right westbound travel lane of I-90. The bike accident occurred around 2155 hours in the eastern city limits of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Since the bicyclist was riding in the dark, it is thought that the driver did not see the bike before the collision. However, the driver has not been identified. Police are asking the public to help locate the vehicle involved. Witnesses say the vehicle is possibly orange in color, or possibly partially orange and partially red and may have damage on the right side mirror, right side fender, windshield or hood. Police would like to interview the driver as well as any occupants of the vehicle which struck the bicyclist.
Drivers need to be extra cautious of cyclists riding in the early morning or evening hours. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported 818 bicyclists were killed on the road by a vehicle. That is a 12.2 percent increase and the highest number of bicycle accident deaths since 1995. In addition, 45,000 bicyclists were involved in a bicycle accident with injuries in 2015; down ten percent from 2014. Bicycle accident fatalities were about half during daylight hours.
