Bad Weather in Spokane Causes Several Car Accidents on I-90

Several car accidents on I-90 near Spokane have occurred this morning due to bad road conditions from the snow and ice. Authorities said one crash was fatal and four others resulted in injuries. We want you to be safe out there! Here are some tips for driving on icy roads.

Tips to be Safe While Driving on Snow and Ice

  1. Slow down! You can avoid a car accident in most cases by slowing down to a safe speed such as 45 mph or less even on the highway. A person can easily lose control or have a hard time stopping on ice if they are traveling too fast.
  2. Avoid driving on icy roads if possible. If you don’t have to be out on the roads, stay home. The risk of getting in a car accident is far greater in bad weather conditions.
  3. Take it easy on the brakes. Sliding often occurs from brake application. Instead of braking, start decelerating early. Even vehicles with antilock brakes (ABS) will not help on ice. Once your wheels start sliding you don’t have a choice of going anywhere else.
  4. Correct a slide by turning into it. Fishtailing or sliding usually indicates that you are going too fast. If you feel your vehicle start to slide, turn your wheels in the direction the rear of the vehicle is sliding. If you need to, look in the direction you want the car to go to make it easier. If you start to overcorrect, start turning in the opposite direction.
  5. Accidents happen in multiples on icy roads. If you are already in an accident your next greatest threat is other out-of-control vehicles. If your vehicle is still drivable, move to safety. If not, stay in your car.
  6. Don’t stop to help on an icy road. There probably isn’t much you could do to help someone stuck on any icy road. If the person is not in immediate danger, the best thing you can do for them is to call 911 and alert the proper authorities.
  7. Avoid hills during icy conditions. If you attempt to go up a hill at a steep incline and the road is icy, gravity may take its toll.
