A car accident involving motorhome killed a Middleton, Idaho resident today. Police report that the car was heading south on Highway 95 outside of New Meadows, Idaho when it crossed over the center line and collided with a motorhome. The car went off the right shoulder and rolled. The driver was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. Reports say that the driver and passenger of the motorhome were wearing seat belts.
Motorhomes can present dangers on the roadway even if you are not driving them. According to a 2006 study form the National Highway Traffic Association, 76 percent of all fatalities from motorhome accidents were the occupants of the passenger vehicle. Of course, this study is a little out of date, but the sheer difference in mass between passenger vehicles and motorhomes presents an increased risk of severe injury or fatality for those in the passenger vehicle. A motorhome can be more than 25 times heavier than the average car; thus, it takes longer to stop and needs more space. One way to avoid a car accident is to give large vehicles extra stopping space. Motorhomes can also be affected by improper weight distribution, which can cause the vehicle to sway.
To avoid collisions with motorhomes or other large vehicles, here are a few recommendations to keep in mind.
1. Beware of blind spots located at the rear, the side, and the connecting point between the truck and trailer. If you can’t see the driver in the truck’s side mirrors, the driver can’t see you. If you need to pass, make sure the driver has seen your signal and knows your intentions.
2. Don’t change lanes suddenly. Check your blind spot and move over with caution.
3. Avoid getting squeezed at an intersection when a motorhome makes a wide turn. Leave plenty of space by staying back and waiting for the motorhome to turn.
4. Maintain a safe following distance to allow for greater stopping time.
5. Drive the speed limit and always use turn signals when passing. This is good advice for driving in general, but this can keep you safe when sharing the road with motorhomes or other large vehicles.
