Three people were injured in a car accident involving a school bus in Caldwell Idaho. The car accident occurred when a Buick collided with the school bus on Settlers Drive in Caldwell. Two middle-school students were on the bus but reportedly neither student was injured. The driver and passenger of the Buick, as well as the school bus driver, were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Although the accident report is still in progress, initial investigation indicates that the driver of the Buick was at fault.
From 2004 to 2013, the number of fatal accidents in school-transportation is 1,344 per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Therefore, an average of 134 fatalities per year. Students and drivers accounted for 8 percent of thee fatalities, while non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) account for 21 percent. Much of these fatal car accidents were occupants of other vehicles involved (71 percent). Data also indicates that school age pedestrians are more likely to be hit during certain hours, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Furthermore, they are statistically likely to be between 8 and 13 years of age.
School buses are designed to be safer than passenger vehicles to avoid car accidents and prevent injury. The safest mode of transportation for getting children to and from school is still a school bus. It is important to remember safety for children surrounding school buses and crossings. Be aware of school bus stops and possible vulnerable crossing points. Talk to your children about proper crossing procedures near school bus stops and zones.
