Coeur d’Alene Resident Involved in Fatal Motorcycle Accident

A Coeur d’Alene resident was recently involved in a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred in Wyoming. Officials say the motorcycle accident occurred on U.S. 16 near Moorcroft. The driver of the motorcycle was heading westbound when it entered the eastbound lane and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The motorcycle crashed into a barrow ditch where it was engulfed in flames. Both the driver of the motorcycle and the car died at the scene of the accident.

Motorcyclist Fatalities

In 2017, nearly 5,000 fatal motorcycle accidents occurred. Though tragic, that is almost 300 less than in 2016. However, fatal motorcycle accidents occur much more frequently than any other traffic death. In fact, motorcycle fatalities occur 28 times more often than those of passenger vehicle occupants, based on per mile traveled. All of these statistics are reports released by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“Motorcyclist fatality number has fluctuated from year to year over the past decade, so while we are cautiously optimistic about this projection, we really need to see a sustained trend downward toward eventually eliminating motorcyclist fatalities altogether,” said Tara Casanova Powell, author of “Motorcyclist Traffic Fatalities by State.”

The figures mentioned above are projections based on preliminary data provided for 2017 from all 50 states in America and the District of Columbia. 2017 compared with 2016, motorcycle fatalities have decreased in 30 states, remained the same in two states, and increased in 18 states.
