Distracted Driver Causes a Head-On Car Accident North of Spokane

A distracted driver caused a car accident north of Spokane on Newport Highway last week reported Washington State Patrol. A car was traveling northbound when it struck another car head-on heading southbound when coming around a curve. All persons in both cars were taken to the hospital by ambulance. It is thought to be that the driver was distracted and not paying attention while rounding the curve and thus caused the crash.

Who is Considered a Distracted Driver?

Some things that could be considered distracted driving include:

  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Texting
  • Eating or drinking
  • Reading
  • Using a navigation system
  • Adjusting the radio or other device to play music
  • Grooming
  • Talking to passengers

In 2014, 431,000 people were injured and 3,179 people were killed in a car accident involving a distracted driver according to distraction.gov. Many may assume that only young drivers are distracted while driving. Only ten percent of all young drivers between the age of 15 to 19 years old involved in a fatal car accident were reported as a distracted driver at the time of the accident.

Every moment that passes there are an approximate 660,000 drivers across America driving while using a cellphone. This number has held steady since 2010. The National Safety Council has reported 1.6 million car accidents each year resulting from cell phone use while driving. These are appalling statistics that will hopefully make you think before considering doing anything else but driving the next time you get behind the wheel.
