Distracted Driving Causes Injury Crash on I-84

Idaho State Police reported a two-vehicle injury-crash on westbound Interstate 84. The car accident occurred when a distracted driver failed to yield to slowing traffic and rear-ended the vehicle in front of them. The vehicle that was rear-ended was in the second left-hand lane when it was hit. It then drove across both right lanes, struck the barrier and stopped in the far right lane of travel. The vehicle which caused the crash spun onto the right shoulder. All involved in the accident were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision but needed to be transported by ground ambulance for evaluation of injuries. Traffic in the three right lanes was blocked for about an hour while crews cleared the accident.

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any behavior that diverts the attention of the driver from watching the road such as texting, eating, talking to other people on the phone in the car, adjusting the radio or stereo, etc. Anything that takes the attention of the driver away from the task of driving safely is distracted driving.

Three Types of Distracted Driving

There are three main types of distracted driving.

  1. Visual: taking your eyes off the road
  2. Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
  3. Cognitive: taking your attention or mind off of driving

Texting While Driving

The most alarming distraction is texting. What seems like a simple and easy task as sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. Though five seconds doesn’t seem like that much time, at 55 mph, a vehicle can travel the length of an entire football field in five seconds.

Using a cell phone is an enormous risk for a serious car accident. In 2017 alone, 3,166 people were killed in a car accident involving a distracted driver according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
