Idaho State Police reported a fatal motorcycle crash near downtown Boise last week. Officials say the motorcyclist was driving eastbound on Interstate 84 when he lost control of the bike and struck the barrier on the median side. The driver was thrown off the motorcycle and over the median barrier wall. Police did not report any other vehicles being involved in this accident. It was however reported that the motorcyclist died at the scene of the accident from injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the motorcycle crash. Traffic was blocked by emergency vehicles for over three hours while crews were investigating the accident.
Unlike a motor vehicle accident, a motorcyclist does not have the protection of a vehicle. Thus, motorcyclists are much more likely to suffer serious injuries or even death after a motorcycle accident. Here are some tips for what to do if you lose control of your motorcycle.
In the event that a motorcyclist has to brake suddenly, they are at risk of flying forward. Balance the rate of your braking by using a combination of back and front brakes.
Many motorcyclists involved in an accident are too tense and grip the handlebars too tight. To reduce injuries, relax.
When you lose control of your motorcycle it may be difficult to think straight. However, if you can think of a safe landing spot while in the heat of the moment, you could reduce your risk of injury. Make a judgment call that will keep your bike away from other cars or objects if possible by steering yourself away.
