A fatal semi-truck accident after a fiery crash killed the driver. A witness who was driving ahead of the semi-truck said the 18-wheeler suddenly jetted across the freeway and then suddenly was in flames. All northbound lanes of traffic were closed for several hours as crews worked to put the fire out and clear the accident. The exact cause of the crash is unknown.
Thankfully vehicle fires do not happen often. However, when a vehicle does catch fire it is potentially deadly for those in the vehicle or nearby. In 2016, firefighters responded to 204,000 car fires in America according to the U.S. Fire Administration. While some vehicle fires are caused by collisions, they are actually more often caused by problems with the vehicle’s electric wiring, fuel system or even cigarettes left in the vehicle. Have your vehicle checked frequently to avoid a vehicle fire. The following are some warning signs to watch for.
Knowing what to do if you see your vehicle smoking or see flames can prevent injuries and even save lives. A fire can break out in places other than under the hood. For instance, a fire may start under the vehicle, near the wheels and brakes, in the dashboard, or even inside the car.
The National Fire Protection Association Council recommends taking the following steps if you’re vehicle catches fire while you are driving.
