• Use extra caution when driving across bridges or on concrete highways. Ice forms first on these surfaces.
• Avoid driving through snowdrifts. These areas could be slicker.
• If you see a shaded area, slow down before coming to it. Ice and snow melt last in shaded areas.
• Use chains or snow tires where necessary.

Use Chains When Necessary

Watch for signs indicating when chains or snow tires are required. Chains include link and cable chains as well as other devices that attach to the vehicle, wheel, or outside of the tire that are designed to increase traction. In some areas, four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles may be exempt from the use of chains.

Keep Your Vehicle Maintained

• The following are some things to check on your vehicle before driving on snow covered or icy roads.
• Windshield wipers are in good working condition.
• Antifreeze and all other fluids are topped off.
• Make sure hoses are not brittle or loose.
• Make sure your heater and defroster are working.
• Check the battery is fully charged.
• Ensure your tires are in good condition and are properly inflated.
• Carry chains or use snow tires.

Be Aware of Snowplows

During the winter, you will encounter snowplows and sanding trucks. Make sure you do not flow a plow or sander too closely. These large vehicles need room! Also, do not pass a plow or sander. Sometimes a plow works side-by-side with another plow to get the roads clear faster.
