Juvenile Passenger Not Wearing Seatbelt Ejected After Car Crash

A juvenile passenger not wearing a seatbelt was ejected from the vehicle after a car crash near Boise. The car crash occurred when a driver attempted to make a left-hand turn but collided with an oncoming vehicle. The juvenile who was ejected was riding in the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, as well as his two juvenile passengers, were transported by ground ambulance to a nearby medical center in Boise. Reports say the driver attempting to turn who caused the collision was not injured but their vehicle did overturn and came to rest on its top off the roadway. All other persons involved in the car crash beside the juvenile were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Juvenile Passenger Statistics

During 2016 in the United States, 723 children age 12 and younger died in a car accident. 35 percent of these children who died, was not wearing a seat belt according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 2016 data. One study found that in one year, more than 618,000 children under 12 rode in a vehicle without the use of a seatbelt, booster seat or child safety seat.

Why would a parent not buckle their child? Most of the drivers in these accidents were not wearing a seat belt themselves and were often driving drunk. Another reason for these unfortunate fatal car accidents is the child was improperly restrained in their car seat. In fact, an estimated 46 percent of car and booster seats are misused in such a way that reduces their effectiveness.

Reducing Risk for Juvenile Passengers

Proper use of age and size-appropriate car seat, booster seat or seat belt reduces the risk of serious and fatal injuries.

  • Use of a car seat reduces the risk for injury in a car crash by 71 to 82 percent when compared to seat belt use alone.
  • A booster seat reduces the risk of serious injury by 45 percent for children age 4 to 8 years old when compared with seat belt use alone.
  • Seat belt use for older children and adults reduces the risk of death and serious injury by approximately half.
