Motorcycle Accident Injures Two from Driver Failing to Yield

Idaho State Police reported a motorcycle accident which injured two was caused by a driver failing to yield. A motorcyclist and their passenger were driving westbound on Simplot Blvd when a passenger vehicle attempted to make a left-hand turn in front of them causing the motorcycle accident. Both motorcyclists were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. They were injured in the crash and were transported by ground ambulance to a nearby medical center in Boise. The driver of the passenger vehicle was wearing a seatbelt and reportedly did not have any injuries from the motorcycle accident. All lanes surrounding the area of the crash were blocked for nearly three hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Motorcyclists Are Often Hard to See

Because motorcycles are not a common vehicle on the road, the human brain often fails to see them according to new research published in Human Factors, “Allocating Attention to Detect Motorcycles: The Role of Inattentional Blindness.” The study examines a person’s failure to notice an unexpected object such as a motorcycle riding in traffic. In some cases, a driver will appear to look directly at a motorcyclist but still pull out into its path.

A professor of psychology at Australian National University, Pammer, notes, "When we are driving, there is a huge amount of sensory information that our brain must deal with. We can't attend to everything, because this would consume enormous cognitive resources and take too much time. So our brain has to decide what information is most important. The frequency of LBFTS crashes suggests to us a connection with how the brain filters out information."

Motorcycle Collisions

Motorcycle accidents can result in serious injuries. A motorcyclist has nothing to soften the blow of a collision; therefore, injuries obtained in a motorcycle accident can be more extensive than if the driver were in a car.

To make matters worse, motorcycle insurance is not usually as comprehensive as automobile insurance and might not include medical payment coverage.
