Rollover Semi Truck Accident Near Meridian

Idaho State Police reported a rollover semi truck accident near Meridian on Tuesday morning. Troopers say the semi was hauling frozen chicken driving westbound on I-84 in Meridian. The driver drifted on to the right shoulder, lost control of the semi truck and overturned on its side. Both the driver and his passenger were taken by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. The driver was wearing his seatbelt. However, the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the semi truck accident. All westbound lanes of Interstate 84 were blocked for about three and a half hours while crews worked to clear the frozen chicken and other debris.

What Causes a Semi Truck to Roll Over?

Large vehicles such as 18-wheelers, tractor trailers and alike have a greater tendency to roll over. This is due to their large size. When a large truck changes direction too quickly, the cab and the trailer flip. For example, when a semi truck is speeding through a curve, it is prone to roll over. Trucks are likely to tip over because of the location of their center of gravity. Cars have a different center of gravity and therefore are less likely to flip over. The following are some causes for large trucks to roll over.

  • When a large truck is speeding it will often rollover after hitting a bump, hitting a different road surface or going through a curve too quickly.
  • Unsecured loads or too much weight. An improperly balanced load can cause the driver of a large load to easily lose control and therefore rollover.
  • Driving drowsy. Semi truck drivers are often given long hours behind the wheel. However, a truck driver is required to follow all FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) guidelines on getting proper rest. Even truck drivers are found falling asleep behind the wheel and causing accidents.
  • Distracted driving. Just like in a car, a semi-truck driver can be distracted from the radio, eating, looking at a GPS, or grooming instead of being focused on the road. Even a momentary lapse can have life-changing effects for the driver or anyone else on the road at the time.
