Teens Involved in Wrongful Death Car Crash

A teenager was involved in a wrongful death car crash on Fairway Avenue due to the driver speeding on a curvy residential street. Four other teens in the car were injured in the crash. South Salem residents are now concerned about speed safety on this street. The posted speed limit is 25-mph for Fairway Avenue which is a residential street. Salem police reported at least four other car crashes on this street within the last year. Residents are now calling for the installation of speed bumps to keep drivers from going too fast on this residential road. However, according to a Master System Transportation Plan for Salem, Fairway Avenue is a collector street, meaning it serves to connect residential areas to larger roads. Collector streets do not qualify for speed bumps according to a Public Works director with the City of Salem. Larger collector streets are often used by emergency responders to quickly get to an accident. Fairway Avenue also does not meet other requirements for speed bumps such as at least 600 drivers per day. Also, the street would need to have over half the drivers traveling at or over the speed limit. Neither are the case for Fairway Avenue.
