Tips to Avoid a Semi Truck Accident

Semi trucks and frightliners are large, often oversized vehicles. Often times the driver of these large vehicles cannot see everything around them. Here are some tips to avoid a collision with a semi truck.

  1. Make sure you are visable to the semi truck driver. Avoid driving in the semi truck’s blindspot which is directly in front of the cab, on the right of the cab, on the driver’s side from the cab door to 1/3 down the trailer and directly behind the trailer.
  2. Leave five seconds between you and the semi truck.
  3. Never cut off a semi truck. These large vehicles take longer to slow down and stop than a regular vehicle.
  4. Use your turn signal and have patience. Semi trucks drive slower than a car due to its size. If a semi truck cuts you off, it is usually not to inconvenience you. They are keeping momentum. Honking, tailgating or flashing your lights will not speed things up. Just be patient and courteous.
