A recent study shows more car accidents occurring by overconfident teens who have been driving for a few years.
According to the study done by Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and the group Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), over half of all U.S. high school seniors have a car accident or near misses. Compare that to high school sophomores with 34 percent being involved in a car accident.
A fatal car accident involving a teen occurred near Boise according to the Idaho State Police. The teenage driver was attempting to cross a busy intersection when it was struck by an oncoming pickup truck. Unfortunately, the teen died at the scene of the accident. A teenage passenger riding with the teen driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Boise for evaluation of injuries. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were not injured. US 95 was blocked for about three hours while crews worked to clear the accident.
The before mentioned study said 75 percent of high school seniors “feel confident” in their driving. So much so that 71 percent admitted to using a cell phone while driving. The study said the over confidence of teens could be due from parents slacking off on punishment for poor driving after their kids have been driving for a few years.
