Washington State Traffic Commission (WSTC), reported that 22 percent of fatal car crashes in Washington involved someone not wearing a seatbelt. This is why Washington State Patrol (WSP) is now urging drivers and passengers to buckle up before hitting the road. Multiple serious collisions and fatalities have taken place this year on Washington roads. As of July 12, 2019, so far this summer, two drivers have been ejected from their vehicle after a crash. Both needed to be transported by air ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of serious injuries. So far just this month, four unbelted drivers were seriously injured, and one killed. Had these persons been wearing a seatbelt, the outcome could have been much different.
“WSP takes a no tolerance approach to not wearing this important life-saving piece of vehicle equipment,” said WSP District 8 Captain James Mjor. “Data consistently supports that by using your seatbelt you significantly increase the likelihood of surviving, even some of the most moderate of vehicle collisions. We must not forget the importance of child safety as well when it comes to protecting our most important asset – our children.”
Seatbelts were one of the first major safety improvements in motor vehicles. Seatbelt technology has evolved to making them safer, more effective and harder to disregard. The United State Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that seatbelts reduce car accident related injuries and deaths by approximately 50 percent.
The main purpose of a seatbelt is to prevent secondary collisions after a car accident. After a collision, the bodies in the car will continue to move in the direction and speed at which they were prior to the collision. A seatbelt is designed to restrain this additional movement and prevent additional injuries. Furthermore, seatbelts are made to absorb the impact between the body and the belt quickly and with as little damage as possible. Without a seatbelt, the body will continue to move forward until it reaches a part of the car, which will absorb the impact. Typically, the fragile human body will come in contact with a hard, inflexible part of the car’s interior, which will result in serious injury or even death regardless of speed.
