Idaho State Police reported a fatal head-on collision in Canyon County near Sand Hollow Road. Police say the driver of a passenger vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a westbound traveling driver. The driver traveling westbound succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. All parties were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The passenger of the deceased was transported by air ambulance to a nearby medical center in Boise for evaluation of injuries.
A head-on collision occurs when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions crash into each other. These types of car accidents are among the most dangerous due to the force of impact being doubled by the speed of each vehicle. Thankfully head-on collisions are rare compared to other types of vehicle accidents. However, even in a relatively slow auto accident, each car traveling only 25 mph would result in a tremendous impact equal to the force of hitting a wall at 50 mph. Considering most roadway speed limits are over 25 mph, you are more likely to experience a head-on collision with a force of an impact at 60 to 70 mph force.
