Avoid Head-on Car Accident by Knowing When to Pass

Idaho State Police reported a fatal car accident on southbound State Highway 55 north of Banks in Boise County. Police reported the driver of a passenger vehicle attempted to pass when they were hit head-on by an oncoming semi-truck. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene of the accident. The semi truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital by personal vehicle for evaluation of injuries. State Highway 55 was blocked for about two and a half hours while crews worked to clear the accident. An accident such as this is all too common on Idaho rural roads. By knowing when to pass, you could avoid a head-on car accident and save the life of yourself or someone else.

Avoid Head-on Car Accident by Knowing When to Pass

The following are some things to be aware of before attempting to pass.

  • The speed limit. Know what the speed limit is in the area before attempting to pass. The force of impact in a head-on collision will be greater if vehicles are traveling at a higher speed.
  • Pay attention to road signs. If a steep hill or curve is coming up soon, do not pass.
  • Understand the pavement markings. A solid yellow line indicates that a vehicle should not pass another vehicle on that area of the roadway. Usually, a solid line is there because something coming up would block a driver’s view such as a hill or curve. The only time crossing over a solid yellow line is permitted is to make a legal left-hand turn. Even then you should use great caution.

Idaho Rules of the Road: Passing with Care

Knowing when to pass is critical to avoiding a car accident. Many drivers become impatient with slow-moving vehicles and what to pass right away. However, it is more important to be patient and only pass when it is safe to do so. The Idaho Rules of the Road for passing with care can be found in our blog post here.
