Three-Vehicle Crash with Injuries at Ten Mile Road
Idaho State Police reported a three-vehicle crash with injuries at Ten Mile Road in Meridian. A Dodge pickup truck rear-ended a Ford Mustang as traffic was slowing. The Ford Mustang then collided with a Ford Edge who was stopped in traffic. The three-car pileup injured the driver and the passenger of the Ford Mustang. They were transported to a nearby hospital in Meridian for evaluation of injuries. All persons involved in this car crash were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Traffic to the on-ramp was blocked for about 30 minutes as crews worked to clear the crash.
Who is a Fault in a Three-Vehicle Crash?
A common question following a three-vehicle crash or multi car accident is, who is liable? Determining liability can sometimes prove to be difficult even when just two drivers are involved. However, when multiple vehicles are involved, the situation can become even more complex. When a driver’s vehicle struck another vehicle only because their vehicle was hit, does that make this driver liable? When there is a pile-up of three or more vehicles, the driver at fault will still be the one who rear-ended the first vehicle. The driver of a vehicle who was pushed into the car in front of them due to impact, is usually not found liable because they have no control over the collision. Typically, the first vehicle that failed to stop and caused the chain of collisions will be found at fault for the entire accident.
The following are a few case scenarios.
Car A makes a sudden stop due to changes in traffic ahead. Car B following behind car A, slams on their brakes and stops just in time. Car C fails to stop causing a three-vehicle crash. Car C collides with car B shunting car B forward into car A. In this case, car C is liable for the damages to both car B and car A.
Car A comes to a quick stop due to traffic slowing quickly ahead. Car B slams on their brakes but still runs into the back of Car A. Car C following behind car B, fails to stop and runs into Car B. Each car has failed to stop in time. In this case, car B and car C are each liable for the person they rear-ended. Car B is liable for the damage to car A. Car C is liable for damages to car B.
Car A runs a red light and crashes into car B and C who were driving through the intersection on a green light. Car A is liable for all damages.
