Wrong Way Driver Causes Fatal Car Accident in Boise

A wrong way driver caused fatal car accident in Boise reported Idaho State Police. The driver of a vehicle heading northbound in the southbound lanes on Middleton Road succumbed to their injuries at the scene of the accident after hitting two oncoming cars. Injuries of one driver hit caused the victim to have to be transported to a nearby hospital by air ambulance. It was reported that this driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the car crash. The other driver hit was taken to a hospital by ground ambulance. This driver was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Officials are not sure why the vehicle that caused the accident was driving the wrong way.

Common Reasons for Wrong Way Accidents

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA), wrong way accidents kill between 300 and 400 people on the road each year. Though that number sounds alarming, wrong way accidents only make up 3% of all motor vehicle accidents on U.S. roads. However, the fatality rate of wrong way accident is between 12 and 27 percent higher than all other types of car collisions according to The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Here are some common reasons for wrong way accidents:

  1. Driver is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medications.
  2. Driving tired.
  3. Poorly marked ramp signs.
  4. Unable to see.
  5. Mental health problems.
  6. Driver is unfamiliar with the area or the roadway.
  7. Distracted driving.

How to Avoid Wrong Way Accidents

Like any accident, you may not always be able to get out of the way of an oncoming car. To stay safe, drive defensively. Always be on the lookout for what is ahead and around you as much as possible. The further the distance you can see the more likely you are to be able to avoid a crash. Another tip is to travel in the right lane when possible. Traveling in the right lane gives you the best chance to avoid an on-coming wrong way driver. For example, if the driver is confused, driving in the opposite direction, the left lane would be their right lane.
